Yosemite Backup 8.5 Service Pack 2 |
1 November 2007 |
These release notes complement the documentation provided with Yosemite Backup.
This document addresses new features, updates, known issues and their
workarounds.
· Notices
Yosemite Backup is continuously tested on many operating systems and
configurations. For the latest list of supported systems, see http://www.yosemitetech.com/support/os/.
To install Yosemite
Backup on Windows, you must have installed Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher.
NOTE: Version consistency when using network backup: If you are running Yosemite Backup on a network, always install the latest version or service pack on each machine for which you have purchased a license.
You can upgrade to the current release of Yosemite Backup from the following versions:
· TapeWare 6.3 SP3E
· TapeWare 7.0 SP7D
· Yosemite Backup 8.0 (all service packs)
· Yosemite Backup 8.1 (all service packs)
· Yosemite Backup 8.5 (all service packs)
NOTE: This version of Yosemite Backup will not be able to communicate with previous versions. Thus if you upgrade, you must upgrade your entire storage management domain to continue with your same backup schedule(s) for all machines.
· Backup Copy policy
The Backup Copy policy is a feature that allows automatic creation, configuration, and scheduling of copy jobs for media created by a backup job. When used with a rotation scheme, this provides great flexibility for the data protection duration for a wide variety of use cases. When used without a rotation, it provides a simple yet powerful way for users to duplicate media.
NOTE: A D2D2Ne™ license is required to enable the Backup Copy Policy feature.
· Auto-Upgrade of Clients
Automatic client upgrade is a feature that is designed to help users with deployment of new service packs or versions of the product in a network environment. When the master server is updated, each client automatically downloads and installs the build, allowing just the domain server to be updated manually by the installer.
NOTE: This feature will be effective when upgrading to future versions of the product. Installation of this service pack will require manual installation on each client. Netware clients will transfer the new service packs to the client, but will not automatically launch the upgrade process. The upgrade process can be initiated by running the installer downloaded to the product temp directory.
· Library Enhancements
Many improvements have been made to enhance user experience with libraries. These enhancements include a media barcode filtering mechanism which allows users to precisely control access to media by barcode. User can specify ranges, wildcards, or explicit barcodes, to either allow or disallow media use by the product. These rules can be overridden by jobs if needed. This only applies to libraries with barcode support; stand alone devices or libraries without barcode support are not restricted.
· New Daily Append Rotation Type
A new rotation type, intended for users with limited media, has been created. A new media set is used each week for a full backup. Daily incremental backups are appended to this media set. This allows a limited number of media to participate in daily backups.
· Yosemite Backup/FileKeeper Package Integration
CD distributions of Yosemite Backup now include Yosemite's FileKeeper product as well. A new installation web page is available with these distributions for Windows and Linux users to facilitate the installation of either of these products. FileKeeper provides continuous file protection of user data. It is designed to protect desktops, laptops, and remote and mobile users. If your distribution does not include Yosemite FileKeeper, please visit our website at http://www.yosemitetech.com/filekeeper/overview/ .
The following is a brief summary of updated features added with this release of Yosemite Backup.
· Improved Linux Support
Many improvements have been made to maintain currency for new Linux releases. As part of this enhancement, all necessary libraries are now included with the distribution. The user is not required to configure additional packages to complete product installation. Disaster Recovery support has been added for Xen based kernels. Partitions are now detected using unique identifiers (UUID). Ubuntu 6 and 7 are now supported.
· Control of Jobs from the properties
Jobs can now be controlled from the within the property page of the job. Previously users were required to close the property page and select the job commands such as Run, Stop, etc. These commands are now available from within the property page.
· Schedule Control Commands
New commands to control the scheduler have been added. The commands include, Pause, Continue, and Run Next Schedule.
· Symbolic Links in Windows Vista
Symbolic Links are now treated as native file system objects on Windows Vista.
The following are
enhancements that have been included in this release:
Yosemite Backup 8.5 Service Pack 2
· [4741] An option to pause the Task scheduler has been added, preventing the next scheduled run of the job from executing. This is in addition to “pause” task command.
· [4848] Generic paths are now used to setup pre and post scripts for jobs
· [4850] Security enhancements for pre and post script execution
· [5129] Support for Ubuntu Linux has been added
· [5134] DR can now be performed on Linux distributions with Xen based kernels without additional configuration steps
· [5202] Added an option to filter media usage by barcode
· [5203] Added the ability for users to reserve an individual loader slot for exclusive use by a specific task
· [5204] Added the ability for loaders to automatically get re-inventoried on unit attention
· [5209] Media objects now show last written, last read fields on media info pane with (none) when they should be hidden
· [5225] Added the ability for an initialization to quickly identify media by their barcode
· [5234] Added the ability for allocated device objects to report who has them allocated and in which task
· [5237] Added the ability for users to control when media get renamed or moved during overwrite
· [5439] Alerts generated within the product are now reported to the application event log when running on Windows and Linux platforms
· [5456] Users can now manually run the next scheduled event without being forced to set the next run time to "now" in the scheduler
· [5461] A job with an active rotation, if renamed, automatically renames the underlying main rotation folder
· [5477] Job names are no longer referenced in the rotation folders
· [5482] The rotation set of the job is now listed in a column, and in the info pane
· [5621] When entering an Upgrade license the product now checks the catalog and the configuration file for any previously installed live license before prompting you for one. Additionally, any licenses deleted are saved in the [deletedLicenses] section of the configuration file in case you need to reference them again.
· Performance settings options are now available that help the user to control Backup performance in a Domain by modifying parameters such as number of active hosts and active selection list thresholds. Backup modes can now be set to sequential or asynchronous on a Workgroup folder.
· Locking is used to synchronize changes made to a catalog object by a user, or prevent an object from being changed if it is currently locked by some other process. The owner of an object lock is now displayed on any object which is locked.
Yosemite Backup 8.5 Service Pack 1
· [3097] Importing split spanned media without the first media would result in HEADER_NOT_FOUND. Split span media can now be imported, though this is not advised as objects may not be recognized if media is imported in the wrong order. This should only be done if the media in the span set is lost.
· [3344] The service daemon for Linux has been converted to use current Linux standards. The service can now take options "install", "remove", "start", "stop", "reload", "restart", and "status" as options. For certain SLES distributions /sbin/startpar is also leveraged.
· [3545] Certain system configurations could lead to the inefficient use of tape drives and media during a backup job. If an object selected for backup has size of 0 bytes, it would previously result in its own streams. It will now be combined with another stream with objects with size. This prevents the 0-byte stream allocating a device, thus freeing up resources for use by other processes.
· [4777] Using default backup job settings could result in overwriting media used in other backup jobs' rotation folders
· [4846] Clients on Windows will choose to use an IP address (if there are more than one tied to that system) which offers the best route to the catalog server. This helps to minimize connection errors when dealing with systems with multiple IP addresses.
· [4955] The maximum number of machines for which the selection list can be built during any number of concurrent jobs is set to four. This keeps from overloading the Master Server during the scanning operation and improves overall performance.
Yosemite Backup 8.5
· [1575] Backup job logs now display software and hardware compression modes that were used during the job
· [2448] The "New" operation has been updated to be context-sensitive to the current location in the UI
· [2938] When installing, the installer now gives a summary of all options that were chosen before executing on those options
· [2984] UNC paths are now handled in a more user-friendly manner when saving or opening files
· [3390, 3442, 4204] The UI now does better filtering on commands related to certain objects; previously this could result in an "Error 3: Invalid Command" when attempting to execute one of these commands.
· [3464] Added better handling of flash memory readers
· [3602] Added compatibility for coexistence with Daemon Tools v3 and v4
· [4280] Improved handling of restore of busy files on Windows
· [4392] When creating a Virtual Library, options that are not applicable during creation are now filtered out
The following are bugs that have been fixed in this release:

The following are known
issues that have not been addressed in this release:
All Operating Systems
· [3506] Disaster Recovery from Split-Spanned media is not supported [4104] DVD+RW fails Disaster Recovery boot or Error 4409 "Header not found" with some devices
· [4221] The Installer does not remove all files and directories on remove. If you run the installer from the directory in which Yosemite Backup is installed, some files and directories may be left behind after the remove process has completed. Instead, run the installer from the Yosemite Backup installation source location to perform the remove.
· [5498] The Catalog is not compatible between languages. To switch to a different supported language you will need to uninstall and re-install the product.
Windows
· [2824] If the Microsoft SQL Server Manager application is open during a restore operation, Yosemite Backup might be unable to restore data to the database. Close the Server Manager application before running the restore job.
· [3232] Mount points on the boot volume fail to restore during disaster recovery. Any mount point on the boot volume fails to restore with Windows error 87: Invalid Parameter. When this happens, a folder rather than a mount point will be created and all files selected for restore under that mount point will be restored to that folder rather than to the location the mount point was originally pointing to.
· [4519] Cannot overwrite-restore SQL Server Embedded Edition databases used by SharePoint 3.0. This is a known issue with Microsoft, which is documented here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926961.
Linux
· [3517] Some Linux systems fail to boot after Disaster Recovery. On some system, such as the Hewlett Packard ML110 G2, ML110 G3, and ML150 G2 running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 4 or 5, after Disaster Recovery completes restoring, the system fails to boot. Reference this TID in order to recover your Grub boot loader: http://www.yosemitetech.com/support/wizard/view_kb.aspx?ID=1785
NetWare
· [2829] The NetWare agent is not started automatically after reboot. To automatically start the NetWare agent on reboot, add "load ytagent.nlm" to your autoexec.bat file.
· [3214] Seagate STT3401A IDE devices show up as offline in NetWare
· [4113] Agent appears to hang when starting on NetWare. Some supported CD/DVD devices do not respond properly to requests for device characteristics. In this situation, the agent will appear to hang when starting on NetWare. The request will timeout and the agent will start after two minutes.
